A legend tells of Dionysus, the god of wine, who pursued a young woman named Amethyst. To protect her, the goddess Artemis transformed her into clear crystal. Mad with grief, Dionysus poured wine on the stone, which then took on its purple color. Its name comes from the Greek "amethyein," meaning "not drunk," because the ancients believed the stone protected against intoxication.
In the Middle Ages, it was worn by bishops and clergy, a symbol of chastity and spiritual wisdom.

The name "lapis-lazuli" comes from the Latin lapis ("stone") and the Arabic azul ("blue"), literally meaning "blue stone".
This stone has been known and used for at least 9,000 years in the civilizations of the Near East and Egypt: statuettes, amulets, funerary jewelry of the pharaohs, etc.
In medieval Europe, it was transformed into ultramarine blue pigment for prestigious paintings (for example in the Sistine Chapel).
